Spring Break 2012

Well!  The Sprout and I journeyed to Philadelphia for a bike ride along the Schuykill River and a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  A beautiful early spring day around 60 degrees.  April 5th 2012.  A good day to be alive!

As we made our way to Markward Park in Fitler Square, we noticed the two newly built rises on each side of the CSX tracks!  How exciting!  Perhaps the Schuykill River Trail will go over the tracks instead of one having to cross tracks for access in that neighborhood!  Here's hoping!

Since the little one is fascinated by sword and sorcery books at the moment (and Greek and Roman mythology!), we naturally had to visit the spectacular Arms and Armor gallery.  What an amazing collection of early European arms and armor!  Swords of every type from 18th Century rapiers to 15th and 16th century two handed swords, beautifully painted heraldic shields, Halberds, crossbows, pikes, early firearms etc etc and even a hand crossbow fitted for small rocks!  Horse armor, children's armor, lances and even a beautiful stained glass of a kneeling German Knight round out this stunning collection.

We had bite in the cafeteria....

In the interest in my abiding dedication to non-violence, I felt after the Arms and Armor gallery a stroll through the amazing Medieval Art gallery was in order.  Next to the Musee de Cluny in Paris, this is my favorite collection I've ever seen.  I try only to take mental pictures but I snuck one of the kid under a spectacular stained glass window out of a French Gothic Chapel from the early 16th century.

All told, a great way to spend a Thursday!
